Community Cow
Linking primary schools, care homes, and local farmers
Linking primary schools, care homes, and local farmers
"If we stop caring about what we eat, then we stop caring about where it has come from, and what kind of life it has had."
Darren Sherwood, Founder of Exmoor Game School
We're linking a local primary school and a care/nursing home with a local farmer. We start by purchasing a heifer from the farmer. It stays on the farm for about 12 months.
During this time, children visit the farm to learn about cattle care and conduct habitat surveys to understand biodiversity and habitat creation. The children present their experiences and findings at the care home.
The heifer is slaughtered, and the meat is shared between the care home, the school, and any donators to the project, providing high quality, sustainable, and local meat to the most vulnerable.
