Community Cow

Linking primary schools, care homes, and local farmers

"If we stop caring about what we eat, then we stop caring about where it has come from, and what kind of life it has had."

Darren Sherwood, Founder of Exmoor Game School

Linking

We're linking a local primary school and a care/nursing home with a local farmer. We start by purchasing a heifer from the farmer. It stays on the farm for about 12 months.

Learning

During this time, children visit the farm to learn about cattle care and conduct habitat surveys to understand biodiversity and habitat creation. The children present their experiences and findings at the care home.

Experiencing

The heifer is slaughtered, and the meat is shared between the care home, the school, and any donators to the project, providing high quality, sustainable, and local meat to the most vulnerable.

Cows to Link Communities

This Project Aims to

  • Reconnect children and communities with their food and where it comes from - getting out of the classroom and seeing it first hand.

  • Foster community cohesion between young and old, countering the negative portrayal of the elderly in society's media.

  • The most vulnerable in our community, namely the young and the old, should have access to the highest quality, nutrient dense food… often this is not the case.

  • Change the narrative around grass-fed cattle from being seen as environmentally damaging to being recognised as habitat creators and a source of high-quality food.

  • Finally, this is often overlooked but is at the core of the health and environmental issues facing today's society - this project encourages people to think about where their food comes from and what it took to produce.
