What are The Exmoor Game School sessions all about? Essentially re-connecting children with their food and where it comes from and how it links to farming on Exmoor. With our roots in education both mainstream and special education - we have seen how empowering and of course fun, it can be for children to learn how to prepare and cook their own food.
This session will look the entire food production process from understanding our quarry (trout), to how to catch, dispatch, prepare and cook them. We absolutely love fishing, the excitement and satisfaction you get from catching your own food is second to none and we are super keen to share this passion and experience with the children of Exmoor and surrounding areas.
These sessions will involve the use of hooks, knifes, fire/stoves and we will be killing, gutting and butchering fish. It is a necessary part of the learning process and we do it with the utmost respect for the quarry we're eating. The children can get as involved as they like or watch and learn, there is absolutely no pressure for them to do anything.
All children MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Fly fishing is not quite as hard as it may look but younger children (under 6yrs) may struggle with the size of the rods, co-ordination etc. You know your children though, if you think they will have fun and enjoy the day, then do get in touch. Younger children are still welcome to accompany older siblings and there will be other ways for them to be involved, netting the fish, eating fish etc.
This session we expect will fill up quickly - we do operate a waiting/reserve list but this is ONLY for the session in question. We just don’t have admin capacity to roll it over.
We do ask for a £10 contribution per child to help meet some of the cost of the fish, licensing, insurance, kit etc.- you are of course welcome to donate a little more and if the cost isa barrier to you coming then please just come anyway.
