This is what The Exmoor Game School is all about - connecting children with their food and where it comes from. With our roots in education both mainstream and special education - we have seen how empowering and of course fun, it can be for children to learn how to prepare and cook their own food.
These sessions will use locally sourced game and fish with each animal creating a different focus for the session. We’ll also work together to make a nice lunch to enjoy out of what we prepare.
As well as the preparation, we will also cover why we might need to cull some animals for example, grey squirrels and crayfish. These sessions are very much about learning and information, we are not here to tell people what they should and shouldn’t be eating…there is enough of that kind of thing already and none of it is particularly useful.
These sessions will involve the use of knifes, fire/stoves and we will be skinning and butchering game animals. It is a necessary part of the learning process and we do it with the utmost respect for the quarry we're eating. The children can get as involved as they like or watch and learn, there is absolutely no pressure for them to do anything.
All children MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
These sessions are super popular and book up quickly - we do operate a waiting/reserve list but this is ONLY for the session in question. We just don’t have admin capacity to roll it over.
